This bold pattern was used on juban, an undergarment worn with men’s kimono during the Taisho era (1912-1926). The armor depicted in the pattern is a type of metal-covering worn for protection of the head in battle. Armor and weaponry were both used as symbols of strength, and also to impart a noble appearance. This pattern was not only worn during battle, but also used for formal occasions.

Since ancient times, the dyed leather of armor has favored designs of strong objects such as Acala, who subjugates enemies and demons, and the Divine Beast , the king of beasts. For the braided cords that weave the armor's small metal plates, navy blue known as kachi-iro (victory color) and red, which wards off evil, were used to bring good luck and to ask for the protection of the gods and Buddhas.
