-About- Horaizu
A pattern from the Taisho era (1912-1926), Horaizu is a mystical utopia of everlasting spring; with auspicious pine, bamboo and plum, flowers of the four seasons, butterflies fluttering, cranes flying, and turtles swimming in the sea.
Tsuru, or the crane, are said to carry happiness and good luck to earth. Since the crane was believed to live 1,000 years, in Japan it has also become a symbol for survival, and long life.
The matsu, or pine, in reality, can live for up to 1,000 years; therefore it not only is a symbol for longevity, it is also a symbol for strength.
The ume, or plum, blooms during the harshest, and coldest of winters; therefore symbolizes vitality, and life-force.
When combined, these symbols are often used in accordance with weddings, representing bliss, and provide the marrying couple with protection and wisdom throughout their lives.
