Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795) was the son of a farmer, who ventured to Kyoto in order to pursue his dream of studying under master painter Ishida Yutei, of the Kano school, and an important painter for the Kyoto Imperial Palace.
Once Maruyama Okyo’s work became established in Kyoto, he himself would be the founder of a major new painting style, known as the Maruyama school.Specializing in the close observation of nature, with delicate brush-work, and bold compositions Okyo’s scroll paintings in particular also demonstrate a new era, such as this painting of “Puppies with Morning Glories”, which is included in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum of Art.
Maruyama Okyo is considered a pioneer, who brought together combined styles of Chinese and Japanese techniques with the realism of Western naturalism, and became one of the most influential of Kyoto 18th century painters.
A collaboration with the TOKYO NATIONAL MUSEUM of ART.
